BEACHES AND THE MED
Less than half an hour’s drive, there’s plenty of choice between, Sete, Marseillan, Valras and Portiragnes beaches. The water is shallow, clean and safe for young children. Between Sete and Marseillan is a wonderful sandy beach that’s 7km long! Sete on the Mediterranean is known as « Little Venice » because of its criss-crossed canals while Marseillan on the sea lake « Bassin de Thau » has retained much of its original character – a small fishing port. Sea food is a speciality and the Bassin de Thau houses thousands of oyster beds. Nearby Cap d’Agde is a host to yachts and boats with a magnificent port, cafés and restaurants, night clubs, casino and every watersport imaginable.
LOCAL ACTIVITIES
Guests were suprised this year by just how much there is to do here:” We haven’t managed to see Half of everything!”
Major attractions such as Carcassonne, Nîmes, the Cathar castles and the Camargue, are within an easy drive and there are lots of things to do locally. Our nearest towns are Pézenas and Beziers.
Fishing, lake-swimming, windsurfing, riding and are all nearby and for music lovers there is a series of local festivals in the region throughout the summer.
Montpellier the “capital” of Languedoc is 40 minutes drive : excellent museums, a medieval cathedral, an opera, cinemas, and loads of good shops.
PEZENAS
Pézenas is Molière’s town and everyone’s favourite - ten minutes drive. Buildings date from XIII century and the architecture is stunning . During the summer months there are permanent craft workshops housed in the typical narrow streets . Pézenas is also host to the antique trade (lots of good buys to be had) plus a French « provençal » market on Saturday mornings.
BEZIERS AND THE CANAL DU MIDI
Beziers, (ten minutes drive) is situated on the edge of the river Orb and has a wine history that dates from Greek and Roman times – it was an important halt on the Roman road “La voie Domitienne” linking Italy to Spain. Important too is it’s Cathar history : during the Middle Ages the town was besieged by the Cathar crusaders where Simon de Montfort declared “ Kill them all, God will recognise his own »…. To happier times, the town is equally famous for it’s part played in the building of the Canal du Midi. Pierre Paul Riquet – the conceptor and a brilliant man, lived in Béziers. It took 12 000 men to build the 240 kilometres canal linking the Mediterranean to the Atlantic and Béziers houses the extaordinary nine locks at Fonseranes. Bicycles and boats can be hired to explore the canal. Throughout the XVII and XVIII centuries Béziers prospered from the wine trade and has an imposing arena « arenes » designed with the help of Saint Saens for Opera. It is now famous for it’s August « Feria » - bullfighting.
In fact, from sports to music and wine tasting to sampling local dishes there is something here for everyone in one of France's most unspoilt regions. For Languedoc is a rare and wonderful place : a precious corner of western Europe full of great natural beauty, fantastic wines and a fascinating history that has somehow escaped the notice of the hordes.
